The curved contours of the San Gabriel Mountains inspired the shape of this house, which has a wide open city view to the South. The variable curvature of the roof is generated by laminated wood arches and straight solid continuous wood timbers spanning and projecting over the arches, making another continuous curve. The wood is exposed on the ceiling side, creating the shape of a wave.
The site is steep, requiring a long driveway that had to be kept at a comfortable slope to access the flat ridgetop site. The driveway goes under the bridge locking portion of the main house and around the back, to access the garage and turnaround space.
